Fluency Disorders

1

What are Fluency Disorders?

Fluency disorders are speech disorders characterized by disruptions in the normal flow of speech. These disruptions can include repetitions of sounds, syllables, words, or prolonged sounds.

Fluency disorders can affect children and adults and may lead to challenges in smooth and effective communication

How I diagnose Fluency Disorders

I begin evaluating a child’s speech pattern, including repetitions, prolongations, and hesitations. I also consider the individual's speaking rate, overall communication, and any associated emotional or psychological factors.

This evaluation helps me identify the presence and nature of a fluency disorder, enabling me to create a personalized treatment plan.

Therapy for Fluency Disorders?

At The Speech Spot, I offer personalized therapy to help children improve speech clarity and communication skills.

Our approach includes individualized assessment, one-on-one sessions, targeted practice, progress monitoring, and active involvement of parents/caregivers.

I create a positive and supportive environment, focusing on not only correcting speech errors but also enhancing overall communication abilities.

Stuttering

Stuttering is characterized by disruptions in the normal flow of speech, which can include repetitions of sounds, syllables, words, or prolongations of sounds.

Example

A child might say, "I-I-I want a-a-a-a cookie, please." During this sentence, you can hear repetitions of sounds ('I-I-I') and syllables ('a-a-a-a'), as well as hesitations ('want') as they struggle with the flow of their speech.

Cluttering

Cluttering involves rapid and disorganized speech, with individuals speaking too quickly and merging words together, making their speech difficult to understand.

Example

A child might say "Iwannagotothezooandseetheelephantsandthenhaveicecream," with words and ideas merging together and little articulation between them.

A Speech Spot Therapy Example

In a fluency-focused therapy session, I prioritize creating a supportive space to address challenges in speech flow. The session begins with a warm welcome, fostering a comfortable atmosphere. Utilizing a combination of interactive exercises and technology, we work on strategies to enhance fluency, including smooth transitions between sounds, reduced repetitions, and controlled speech rate.

Engaging in conversation and storytelling, I guide the child through exercises to build confidence and reduce hesitations. Visualization techniques, breathing exercises, and mindfulness activities are introduced to promote relaxation and ease during speech. Throughout the session, I offer positive reinforcement and encouragement, creating a safe environment for the child to practice and refine fluency skills.

As the session progresses, we collaboratively set goals for ongoing fluency development, ensuring a personalized and motivating experience. My approach aims to provide effective strategies that the child can incorporate into everyday communication, fostering improved fluency and increased self-assurance.
